The following
is a sample of what will be covered in class.
PARTS OF
SPEECH REVIEW
To students: Working with a partner, make the changes
suggested at the bottom of this page. You may ask the teacher for
assistance. Paragraphs will be read
aloud in class.
The man walked along the
street. The night was windy
and dark.
A piece of newspaper blew along the street.
Somewhere a
dog howled. The smell of the harbor filled
the air.
1. Change the
concrete noun “man” into a proper noun.
2. Replace
the verb “walked” with a stronger action verb that tells exactly how he
walked.
3. Add an
adverb in front of or after the word you substituted for “walked.”
4. Modify
“night” with a descriptive adjective.
5. Add an
adverb to the newspaper sentence. (You may change the verb)
6. After the
verb howled, create a new sentence about the dog using a pronoun.
7. Form a
compound sentence by combining any two of the simple sentences of your
choosing.
8. Somewhere
in the paragraph add a simile.
9. Add a
prepositional phrase anywhere in the paragraph.
After you
and your partner have completed the assignment, exchange with another group to
make corrections before you read aloud.
